Carolina Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (COSM) was formed in September 2007 by the merger of two prominent practices; New Bern Orthopedic Associates and East Carolina Orthopedics. The joining of these two premier groups afford over 30 years of experience and medical expertise.

- About Orthopedics
An orthopedic surgeon is a physician devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries, disorders and diseases of the body's musculoskeletal system. This includes bones, ligaments, joints, muscles, nerves and tendons. Areas of specialization include sports medicine, foot and ankle, hand, shoulder and elbow, spine, hip or knee, trauma, pediatrics or reconstructive surgery.
Patients of all ages are treated for conditions that range from bone and joint disorders and fractures to diseases or tears of the muscles, ligaments and tendons in all regions of the body. Most treatment is done without surgery, by using medication, exercise and other rehabilitative or alternative therapies. If necessary, surgical treatment is recommended if the patient does not respond to other treatments.
